Unlike the lectures we sit laboriously through in schools and colleges (or at least used to), these ones here on the browser make for stimulating listening. You can always close your browser, but I don’t think you will. So, let’s check out these two online ‘idea’ sites and understand how the world is evolving.
TED
That’s Technology, Entertainment, and Design for you. TED is actually a global conference that brings together thinkers and doers on a common platform. Offshoots, like the acclaimed TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and TED Conversations, the inspiring TED Fellows, TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize have helped to spread innovative ideas around the world. The About page on the site mentions the history and scope of the non-profit. For you and me, the filters on the homepage are the first point of interest. You can also drill down to your area of interest by browsing through the well laid out list of tags. But I prefer to click on the filter that says – Rated jaw-dropping. A cursory glance through the tags or the filters shows that there isn’t an area of human interest or emotion that has been left uncovered. My recommendation is to click on view videos even if they aren’t in your area of interest. For example, William Kamkwamba’s story on how he built a windmill could inspire you with your own enterprise.
The Do Lectures
The Do Lectures may not cover as many areas of human interest as the TED talks, but the videos ignite the one emotion that matters most – inspiration. The lectures are given by ‘fire starters’; people who followed their passions and went on to do something. You can browse by topic (Business, Environment, Technology etc.) or tone (Big Ideas, Funny, Inspiring etc.). You can check out the bios of the speakers. Also, don’t forget to look into the Resources section for some cool book ideas if you are on the inspirational warpath. There are a couple of other things that’s common between the two sites – both streaming video sites are beautifully put together, and are totally free.
