Both the phones marks a major milestone for their makers — while the Apple iPhone X (pronounced ‘Ten’) marks the tenth anniversary, the Galaxy Note8 has a more peculiar agenda and that is to wipe the disastrous ending of the Note7 from the people’s mind. So it seems only fair that we pit these two devices against each other and see which one has a better worth for your money. Before we get started, let’s have a quick rundown of the specs.

1. Screen: Size & Resolution

At 6.3-inch, the Galaxy Note8 sports the biggest screen in Samsung’s current fleet of phones. It packs in a Quad HD+ Super AMOLED screen that can render images which are crisp and sharp. Well, display is Samsung’s forte and they rarely go wrong with it. On the other hand, Apple has broken away from the stereotypical displays used in the older iPhones and have come up with an OLED display — the first for an iPhone X. In fact, Phil Schiller has touted this OLED display to be great enough to be on an iPhone. If we talk numbers, the iPhone measures 5.8 inches and the Super Retina display has a resolution of 1125 x 2436 as opposed to the Quad HD resolution of 1440 x 2960. When it comes to the pixel density, the iPhone boasts of 458ppi, again a highest for an iPhone. On the contrary, the Note8 bundles a pixel density of 521ppi.

2. Processor and Storage: The Power War

In the Android world, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is the de facto chip powering almost 80% of the flagships launched this year. The 8-core Snapdragon 835 is built on advanced 10-nanometer design and is known for its processing prowess and battery efficiency. The Galaxy Note8 is powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor in the US or the in-house octa-core Exynos 8895 (outside the US). It packs in 6-GB of RAM and 64-GB of internal memory. The Apple iPhone X packs in the latest chip by Apple — the A11 bionic processor. Said to the most powerful chip ever to grace an iPhone, the six-core chip sports quite a handful of impressive features to make the iPhone X performance buttery fluid.

Expandable Memory

The iPhone X comes in two variant — 64 GB and 256 GB and doesn’t give the option to increase the internal memory. On the contrary, the Galaxy Note8 comes in only one variant (64GB), but then it gives you the independence to expand the memory to 256 GB.

3. Dual Camera: The Duel of the Dual Camera

Dual Camera setups are the latest fad and both the Samsung Galaxy Note8 and iPhone X is minting on its popularity. Both the phones sport the same camera specs — a pair of 12-megapixel lenses comprising of a wide angle lens and a telephoto lens. Though these lenses combine together to produce a DSLR-like Bokeh effect but let’s face it, it’s a tad too common these days. The fun really starts when it comes to the camera features or add-ons. The iPhone X boasts of a slew of incredible features. Both the lenses analyze the background and the foreground and present an array of lighting solutions such as Contour light (lighting only the contoured portions), Stage light, and Studio light. Though the Galaxy Note8’s camera features are a tad different from the iPhone, they are equally interesting. For starters, it includes the Live Focus mode which lets you manually adjust the photo blur both before and after you take a shot.

4. Iris Scanner vs Face ID

When it comes to securing your Galaxy Note8, it offers both iris-scanning and face-scanning unlock systems along with other conventional methods of locking your device. But what stands out starkly is the improved iris scanner. Since iris patterns are unique for everyone, the scanner maps them and uses them during the unlocking process. Well, at least in pen and paper. Lately, there have been reports that this scanner can be bypassed with a photo. The Apple iPhone X has let go off the Touch ID in this version and has instead come up with an impressive unlock system which goes by the name of Face ID. This technique makes use of an infrared camera to project invisible light markers to read minor details of users face. In pen and paper, Apple has touted the Face ID can be duplicated by 1 in 1 million people.

5. Conventional Locks

An area where the Galaxy Note8 has a sufficient advantage is when the discussion boils down to conventional locking/unlocking methods. Unlike the iPhone X, it also packs in smart unlock, fingerprint lock and PIN or Pattern.

6. S Pen: The Mighty Pen

No mention of Samsung’s fleet of Note devices is complete without the mention of its signature stylus aka the S Pen. The Note8 sports a plethora of impressive features like the Screen Off Memo that lets you create notes even on the locked screen.

7. Price

Price — the ultimate deciding factor when it comes to choosing which device will make its way to your hands. The Samsung Galaxy Note8 with 6GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage is priced onwards $930 in the US (Rs 67,900), while the Apple iPhone X with 3GB RAM and 64 GB internal memory, will retail starting at $999 (Rs. 89,000 in India).

Which One Will You Go For?

These were some of the major pros and cons for both the devices. The choice is ultimately yours — whether you’ll prefer the mark of Apple on your phone with new features or a phone which run on Android and sports a stunning edge-to-edge display.
